Alternative Socialiste (AS) was founded in 2009. Its members are mainly active in the labour movement, the left-wing party Québec Solidaire (QS) and the students’ movement. The most important campaign led by AS within the labour movement and QS has been the struggle for a $15/hr minimum wage in Québec. AS also played a key role in organizing the National Day of Economic Disruption for public sector workers on 1 May 2015, as well as in the adoption of combative wage demands by these same workers in 2019. AS members argues it is necessary to make QS an independent mass workers’ party. AS explains that guaranteeing the right for self-determination for Québec, and the rights of the First Nations, is intrinsically linked to the broader struggle of the Canadian and international working-class movement to overthrow capitalism and for socialist change.
