Once again, just as he was leaving his prison cell in Moscow, Matvey Alexandrov, supporters of “Sotsialisticheskaya Alternativa” has been re-arrested. He has already served two sentences, one of 25 days after he was caught leafletting for International Womens’ Day and then for 15, for participating in one of January’s anti-corruption protests.

The regime is showing all the signs of weakness. It has suffered a 3% drop in GDP in 2020, which although not as sharp as in many countries due to the limited lockdowns it has imposed, inflation is high and real earnings continue to fall. According to the state statistics body, the “excess” death rate over the average year since the start of the pandemic is 422,000 — with an extra 30,000 in February alone. This is at least three times the official fatality rate admitted by the health ministry. The third wave is rapidly spreading across Europe and the Kremlin is afraid that this, on top of the economic crisis will be too much for Russian workers and youth to bear. The prolonged protests in Belarus last year will be just a pale reflection of what would happen if protests spread across Russia in the same way.

It is now clear that the new “crime” they are going to charge Matvey with is participation in another of January’s demonstrations. He faces at least another 30 days in jail. They are doing so for one reason only — to attempt to frighten activists. But socialists will not be frightened in this way.

In particular, we are strengthened by the international solidarity with Matvey has been flooding in. Pickets were held outside the Russian embassies on Brussels, Vienna, London, New York, Dublin, Cape Town and Berlin. Mick Barry TD raised the issue in the Irish Dail. In Krakow our Polish comrades organised a picket and were themselves moved on by armed police. Many letters of support and photographs of solidarity from trade unions, youth activists and socialist feminists have been received.
