World capitalism is in an ongoing crisis, and ruling classes across the world are turning to militarism, nationalism, racism, misogyny, and transphobia to assert their dominance. Political crisis continues, with far-right forces marching forward across the world including in key countries in Europe, Latin America, and in the US. In their effort to save their own system from itself, they are united in taking back basic democratic rights won by working people through struggle over past decades.
War and military aggression are now gripping every corner of the world. From the never-ending and ever-expanding wars in the Middle East, to US aggression in Latin America, and the continued bloodbaths in Ukraine, Sudan, Myanmar, and many others, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed over the past year. Whether directly as cannon fodder and or indirectly through inflation and austerity, workers and the poor pay the price for wars fought for the super-rich.
Almost $3 trillion was spent on the military globally in 2025. The same amount could: fund almost the entire transition to clean energy around the world, cover universal healthcare for a decade, provide clean water for 20 years, or eliminate world hunger for 60 years. The system is telling us exactly where its priorities lie.
Never before has there been a greater need for mass resistance to capitalism and a fundamental socialist transformation across the world.
These are the conditions under which International Socialist Alternative is launching an international finance appeal to help strengthen our forces fighting for socialist change globally.
We have a goal of raising €35,000 by the end of August. International Socialist Alternative is a grassroots force fighting for a socialist society that works for the masses of workers and the poor, not the billionaires. We are trade union activists, leaders at our schools and on our campuses, anti-war activists, and campaigners against sexism, racism and transphobia. Our organization does not accept a cent from big corporations or the bosses. Crucially, this allows us to maintain political independence from the billionaires, but it means that every aspect of our work is dependent on sacrifices from working class people.
ISA in Action!
There is a growing hunger for left-wing ideas, and opportunities to build Marxist forces around the world are opening up. To help build the fightback against war and imperialism, ISA launched an international anti-militarism campaign earlier this year. This was kicked-off with a speaking tour of anti-war, socialist activists. We have also relaunched our website and began publishing a new international journal, International Marxism, a tool for deepening Marxist analysis of the history and theory of class struggle. SAV, ISA in Germany, is playing a role helping organize school students against the reintroduction of conscription and emphasizing the importance of this struggle within the left party Die Linke. Socialistiskt Alternativ, our section in Sweden, is organizing against the right-wing government, and fighting to re-elect socialists to Luleå City Council. In Canada, Socialist Alternative helped to initiate and organize an Earth Day rally and march, pointing towards the need for a militant, socialist climate movement that can take on the climate crisis at its root.
In Brazil, Liberdade, Socialismo e Revolução, has energetically defended a unique socialist internationalist position in recent debates on the Latin American left, calling for a new anti-imperialist struggle based on the working class. Movement for a Socialist Alternative in Nigeria has launched a campaign for re-nationalization of the electricity sector, advocating for a clear socialist alternative to the Tinubu regime, terrorism and imperialist military intervention. In Québec, Alternative Socialiste has played a role in supporting a victorious union drive and is working to build opposition to rising militarism and the far right.
ISA in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan develops crucial and unique Marxist analysis in the shadow of the capitalist CCP dictatorship. In the United States, Socialist Alternative played a role in the heart of the struggle against Trump’s ICE in Minneapolis, participated in the mass “No Kings” protests, and helped build workplace actions and strikes on May Day. In Britain, we have been part of the struggle for a working-class, socialist alternative to the far right.
We Need Your Help to Build Our International
This appeal is necessary to build and expand the building of a Marxist International organization worldwide – in the countries where we are already based, and in new regions of the world where struggle is happening and Marxist organization is needed!
To do that, we urgently need to increase the number of paid organizers, as well as the number of visits comrades make to support the work of all sections. There has never been a time in ISA’s history where a strong finance appeal has been more necessary to strengthen the work of our international.
Buying plane and train tickets, reserving meeting venues, producing posters and leaflets, printing our publications, maintaining our website featuring reports from movements and Marxist analysis of current events – these are among the day to day costs that must be covered to sustain our work and we need your help to make this possible.
To ensure that our members globally can participate in the July ISA School, we are subsidizing travel costs for socialists from Nigeria and Brazil. Consider whether you could donate to cover the travel costs (or part of those costs) for a socialist activist traveling halfway across the world to attend the school – whether that’s €1,000, €100 or €10.
